Help with PowerRIP output or installation

Who do I call when I need help?

Ulano does not support computer programs like CorelDRAW, Illustrator, Photoshop or PowerRIP. We do support our Ulano brand inkjet films. You will receive the best support for PowerRIP when you go directly to the manufacturer, iProof Systems in Florida. The Ulano version of PowerRIP is calibrated for our Dye or Pigment inkjet films and lists the profile in the media choices.

If you are not satisfied with your PowerRIP product or service, Ulano will work for you, to help handle your problem with iProof Systems. The Ulano Edition of PowerRIP ScreenPrint is a customized version of iProof's PowerRIP SilkScreen. Ulano has worked with the programmers at iProof to calibrate the internal settings in PowerRIP for the best screen making opacity and halftone combination with standard EPSON inks. Once loaded, PowerRIP should act like any printer driver.

Your PowerRIP ScreenPrint CD and the Ulano web site contains the User Manual to help you print from popular applications, answer frequently asked questions and identify PostScript or system errors you may encounter.

iProof Systems support is available via phone, fax, mail, e-mail and the Internet.

Telephone support hours are 9AM to 5PM EST (Monday to Friday).

What is your return policy for software?

We offer a FREE working version download of PowerRIP ScreenPrint with a watermark for screen printers to use before validating. If the software is validated, there is no way for us to reactivate the Product Code and resell it. This is why everyone should install a free trial version before validating.

An RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) must be obtained from iProof Systems Technical Support Department before you return PowerRIP for a refund. The complete package must be returned, including all validations. All returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee.

I have several Macs and several printers, how many copies do I need to purchase?

One! PowerRIP functions as a server and is network ready. You can connect your computers via Ethernet and print to any supported network printer.

On an Apple network, all you do is share the PowerRIP printer driver. For Windows, you have to install the Client software on each computer you want to have acces to PowerRIP. If you mix Apple and Windows computers, you have to use a Windows computer as your PowerRIP server. All the drivers needed are included on the PowerRIP install disc.

Does Ulano PowerRIP run on printers connected by network (even on the trial version)?

Yes, all of the PowerRIP products work in a network environment. PowerRIP can be stand alone, or used as a RIP server. The inkjet printer must be shared over the network, as a network printer and connected users must be registered and have rights. This is the basic way it works for Windows and Apple networking.

PowerRIP does not assign the rights. The operating systems Windows or Apple), allows remote users to print to local printers.

What is PostScript and why do I need a PostScript RIP?

PostScript is a programming language designed for printing graphics and text. A PostScript RIP (Raster Image Processor) converts the output from your application into an image that will print on a non PostScript Epson printer for high quality edges and sharp, legible type.

Is PowerRIP user friendly?

Yes it is. iProof designed the options so they are intuitive. If you do not have time to read the manual, you can still use PowerRIP.

Will PowerRIP increase my printer speed?

Unfortunately, no. PowerRIP actually does more processing than a standard printer driver as it converts your Postscript output into language that the EPSON printer can understand. More ink will be deposited and at 1440 or 2880 dpi, that also takes longer. Many factors contribute to printing speed including the speed of your computer, amount of RAM in your computer,

Installing PowerRIP ScreenPrint in Windows

You must first install the Epson drivers for your printer. PowerRIP uses the Epson drivers and they are critical to monitor ink levels and do head and nozzle maintenance.

As you install the Epson drivers, make note of the printer port your printer is attached. PowerRIP is very good at identifying where your printer is, but it is something you will need to confirm.

Windows
Click Start>Printers and Faxes
Right-click on the correct printer in the NAME column, then click Properties, then the Ports tab.

The Description column usually covers some of the Port Name, so you may have to click on the 'separation bar' between the headings and drag the column to the right.

Write down the printer port for that printer and repeat this process with each printer you wish to install.

As with most computer programs, you will need to reboot to finish the process, so now is the time to save all your work and close all programs.

1. Insert the PowerRIP CD into a DVD or CD drive in your computer. Your operating system should automaticly AutoRun the install program unless you have turned off this function. If the splash screen menu does not appear, launch the "setup.exe" application in the CD’s root folder.

Click View Installation Guide which requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. Print the document so you can review it during installation.

Connect Workstation to PowerRIP ScreenPrint Server
This option is used when connecting workstations to PowerRIP ScreenPrint remotely, as a client.

EXIT
Closes the PowerRIP installer program

Beware - At the end of the installation, you will have to reboot the computer for the printer and Postscript drivers to be recognized by the operating system . Please save any documents and close any programs before starting this installation, so you don't lose information.

1. Click Install/Remove/Repair This option installs the PowerRIP ScreenPrint program and all required files.

2.The Install Shield Wizard will start, Click NEXT

3.The License Agreement will be presented, review then click NEXT

4.The Customer Information dialog. Please enter a:

User Name
Company Name
PowerRIP 16 digit Serial Number (Product Code).

If you are installing the DEMO version for evaluation, please enter "EVALUATION" as the Serial Number.

5. Select Components
Select the printer drivers you wish to install. If you want to make .pdf or .tiff files, select them.

6. Select program folder
Leave it at the default setting.

7. PowerRIP will now install. This may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your system.
8. After PowerRIP is installed, you will be asked to install the printer drivers Select your printer (or Printers).

9. A dialog will notify you after each printer driver has been installed. Be patient.

10. You must select the port each printer is connected to. It could be USB001 or USB002, etc.

STOP if you do not know which port the printer is connected to.

11. All the files are installed. You will need to reboot the system for the drivers to be recognized by the operating system. The final window will ask you to click FINISHED before rebooting the system, remove the CD and REBOOT.

Setting the Printer Driver After the system restarts

Setting the Printer Driver After the system restarts, go to the printer folder (Start > Settings > Printers on Windows 2000 or Start/Printers and Faxes in Windows XP)

1. Right Click on PowerRIP Output Queue 1

2. Select PROPERTIES

3. Select the ADVANCED tab

4. In the driver window, use the arrow (on the right side of the window) to change the driver from PowerRIP Stylus driver to the Epson Stylus driver for this port.
Click APPLY, then OK.

PowerRIP printer port drivers use MicroSoft’s generic USB and parallel code.

Selecting Epson’s own printer port driver can sometimes speed up communication speeds over the generic port drivers from MicroSoft. This is especially true on the Stylus 2200/2100 printers

To register your copy of PowerRIP there is a two step process . It can be done with your browser over the Internet or over the telephone during business hours in Florida - where iProof Systems is located.

The Steps
1. You click Validate PowerRIP in the PowerRIP Configure Menu
2. PowerRIP generates a random 6 digit User Code - Don't close the dialog!
3. You go to to the iProof Systems web site and register your name, address and Product Code.

Apple Remove Validation Procedure
Alas, if you are an Apple user, there is NO "remove validation function" in the Apple versions of PowerRIP. Past Apple customers wanted a permanent activation, so that's the way they do it. They will be happy to add an Activation for Apple versions but, it has to be done by hand. You have to send an eMail to support@iproofsystems.com requesting another Activation - along with your Product Code, the name and address that you used for registration.

To register over the Internet, open your browser now and go to: www.iproofsystems.com/activation/

Start PowerRIP
Click START > Programs > PowerRIP ScreenPrint

Under the Configure menu click Validate PowerRIP

Generate Random Unique User Code

The PowerRIP Server Validation dialog box will display a User Code that is randomly generated by PowerRIP and an empty field where you will enter the Activation Code you get back from iProof over the Internet. User codes are programmed to change randomly.

Leave this dialog open, so the user code does not change while you are registering.

1. Start PowerRIP ScreenPrint
Go to START > Programs > PowerRIP ScreenPrint double click on PowerRIP ScreenPrint

2. Put a piece of scrap photocopy paper in the printer to save money by not printing on film. Remember, When you print on test paper, you still have to use the Ulano Pigment Inkjet film setting.

3. Under the File menu, click POSTSCRIPT FILE. The standard Windows Open dialog will display. You should be in the C:\PowerRIP ScreenPrint -folder.

If not, move to it and highlight TRAIN.PS and click open.

4.The configure output window will display. Make sure the correct printer and printer port is selected.

Click OK The file will process and print.
If it doesn't print, you know PowerRIP is not directing output to the right port.
To print from applications, please refer to the documentation in the Start/Programs/PowerRIP ScreenPrint/Documentation.

PowerRIP ScreenPrint Connection to Printer

The Printer Entity (or print-queue) is the actual printer name you will print to. This print queue is the PostScript driver part of the work flow. To configure where the PostScript files will be deposited (and other settings), we use the “Configure Printer Entities Dialog”

Where do I find the Printer settings?

PowerRIP provides the Windows PostScript driver, with a PPD (PostScript Printer Description). The PPD is a text tile that the Windows PostScript driver uses to set the options desited, when it receives print data from CorelDRAW, Screenprint Separator, llustrator, Quark or other applications and "creates" PostScript files to be processed and printed by the PowerRIP ScreenPrint program.

Detailed explanations follow on printer options and the chart at the far right shows four basic print settings you can use. Choose Print > go to Properties and then Advanced. This Printer Features screen shot is setup to make film positives and instead of a stochastic screen a halftone screen ruling is set by the application. Graphics Set Print Quality (Resolution) selection depends on the desired print quality. Normal is 720 dpi for rulings below 90 lines per inch, select higher resolutions of 1440, when printing finer screen rulings (90 lpi up), for better halftone dot shape.

Printer Options

Set Color Mode
"Grayscale" for film positives sent from Corel, Illustrator, Quark, or use “CMYK” for color proofs or separations made in the RIP. Set Halftone Mode Press Target assigns a profile to separate RGB colors into CMYK. SilkScreen uses SWOP/Max Black with GCR.
Set Paper Type
Don't worry that it asks for a paper choice. Choose your type of Ulano Inkjet Film and Photo

Return to top arrowPrinting Using Stochastic or Halftone Screening

PowerRIP ScreenPrint supports stochastic and halftone screening technologies. Stochastic screening, the default for PowerRIP ScreenPrint, is basic to all PoweRIP software. Halftone screening starts at 30 line per inch (lpi) and goes to 150 lpi on the Stylus Color 3000. The back side ofthe Quick Start gives you a general overview of how to do four basic print setups of the Properties/Advanced printing options for screening, resolution, and media type of paper or film positives to generate output for proofs or film.
